Our Parent-Child Book Clubs function as an
abbreviated format for instilling educational change in young children. We
focus specifically on the key activity of parent-child reading. Through our
Parent-Child Book Clubs:
• Low-income parents learn to read regularly and
expressively with their young children
• Low-income children birth to age 3 engage in
stimulating reading activities that increase their literacy
• Parents and children become partners in education
by prioritizing reading in the home
• Families increase the number of children’s books in
the home to more than ten books
Parents have expressed how
effective these Book Clubs are in fostering a love of reading in children. One
mother commented, “when I take out a book my son gets very happy and begins to
jump up and down,” and another mom said, “my daughter’s two, and wherever we go
she now takes a book with her.” Parents note that their children “like reading
more,” are “more interested” in books, and are “more motivated to read.”
Our
Parent-Child Book Clubs extend the Avance-Dallas
impact on at-risk children in Dallas through an easy-engagement model that
makes a visible educational impact on children.
